9th Graders: Report Text (Part One)

Let’s start our activity today with saying Bismillahirrohmanirrohim 👐.

Today’s session is Report Text. Check it out!

    Have you ever known such a phenomenon like Thunder? Flood? Landslide? How the phenomena are occurred? What are the characteristics of the phenomena? 

    or Have you ever seen a group of Zebras? How beautiful they are! Where do they live? Can we find them in Indonesia?

    Those questions seem appear in our mind, right? .... Then when we ask Wikipedia web about the particular things above, an explanation has shown. Nha… the explanation of the particular things in general that is shown in Wikipedia web can be called as Report Text.

    Okay dears…Let’s learn the definition, generic structure, purpose and the language features of Report Text.

        1.   Definition of Report Text

    Report text is a text which presents information about something as it is. It is as a result of systematic observation and analysis.

Teks report adalah teks yang menghadirkan informasi tentang suatu hal atau topic secara apa adanya. Teks ini merupakan hasil observasi dan analisa secara sistematis oleh karenanya teks ini bersifat ilmiah.

2.   Generic structure of Report Text

    There are two main parts of Report Text, they are:

a.       General classification

This part states classification of general aspect of thing, animal, public place, plant, etc will be discussed in general.

Pada bagian ini menyatakan pengelompokan sebuah aspek tentang hewan, tempat umum, tanaman, dll yang sedang dibahas dalam teks secara umum.

b.      Description

This part tells what the phenomenon under discussion; in terms of parts, qualities, habits or behaviors.

Pada bagian ini biasanya menceritakan gambaran fenomena yang terjadi; misalnya bagian-bagiannya, sifat-sifatnya, kebiasaannya, ataupun perilakunya.

    3.    Purpose of Report Text

    The social function of Report text is presenting information about something. They generally describe an entire class of things, whether natural or made: bat, damselfly, fabric, tax, angklung, kerupuk, satay, etc.

Fungsi teks report adalah memberi informasi tentang topic yang sedang dibahas secara umum atau bersifat apa adanya.

        4. Language features of Report Text

        There are some characteristics usually appear in Report text. 

-          use of general nouns
General nouns merujuk pada benda atau topic atau peristiwa yang sifatnya diketahui secara umum.
-          use of linking verbs
Linking verbs disini misalnya [is,am,are] jika present tense dan [seem, look, taste] jika berkaitan dengan pancaindera.
-          use of action verbs

Action verbs digunakan jika menggambarkan perilaku, misalnya: Bats fly out to feed at night-time.
